Bicycle and Books

Keep looking out the window and the rain is always here. Like an unwanted guest who won’t go home no matter how many hints you give.

Always to have libraries around, the perfect hiding spot from the rain. Throw my headphones on and open a book things are good.

This year I’m checking out more books from the library and buying less books. It is a good way to discover writers.

I got in this rut where I start reading a book and it seems like it will be a good read. I buy the book and it slows down and hard to read. I struggle with the read or come back later because I hate the idea of buying a book and not finishing it.

So far I haven’t read a bad book I checked out. Reading fifty pages in a relaxed setting seems to work well.

Looking out the library window and seeing a steady rain really makes it hard to get motivated to pedal home. Riding in the rain home seems to be a longer ride than when there isn’t any rain.

I would get rid of the car, but the job is too far away and I start at 0400. Starting a bicycle ride around 0130 isn’t my kind of riding.

If I started at 0800 I could probably do it because better riding conditions and stopping off for a snack wouldn’t be bad.

Sucks that rent is so high in the SF Bay Area. Moving closer to the job isn’t much of an option.

Bicycle Life

I like getting around by bicycle more than I do getting around in my car. The bicycle is easier to park than the car. The car is basically for getting me to work.

I see it is raining again. I look at the car and then pedal away on my bicycle. Hope the rain doesn’t last all day. Still not a fan of riding in the rain.

The 17mm lens on my Olympus EM10 is my favorite lens.

I have so many digital and film cameras I take a couple along and take pictures while on my bicycle rides.

The rain has went away and that is a good thing. I will have a dry bicycle ride home.

Stopped at the San Pablo Library to have a break and get some reading before the pedal home.

The thing I don’t like about the rain stopping is now it is cold out here. But I have a climb coming up so I will warm up.

Made it home and it was a nice bicycle ride.

Rainy Day Bicycle Ride

Wasn’t raining when I started my bicycle ride. I hit the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and hello rain. I guess I will have to get in touch with my inner duck and enjoy the wet.

At the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge looking over San Pablo Bay wondering what the hell am I doing?

Took the three pictures with my Fujifilm X-E1 with TTAritisan 50mm tilt lens. The lens is pretty cool. Got some blurry part and clear at other parts. Will have to play with this lens more to see what kind of pictures I can get.

I’m not a fan of bicycle riding in the rain, but it wasn’t a bad ride.

The Bike Gods Strike Again

The Schwalbe Delta Cruisers must go.

The bike gods are really after me. At least they left me alone for a while, but they are back. I hear the laughing.

I’m riding by the Craneway building and my rear tire is going flat. Was not expecting this. Thought I was done with rear tire flats.

This time I take the tire off the rim. I wipe down the rim and carefully go through the inside of the tire. Nothing.

This time I go very slowly over the outside of the tire. I find the problem. There is a think piece of metal in the tire. It didn’t go all the way through the tire, but with 10 miles of riding it was enough to put a small hole in the tube.

I think the piece of metal found when I went to the bicycle shop to have the bicycle looked at broke from this piece, but the piece in the tire was not found. Could not feel in when going through the tire.

Since the Schwalbe Delta Cruiser tire isn’t as puncture resistant as I was hoping they would be has to go. So I’m riding home and putting the Schwalbe Marathon tires on the bicycle that I was keeping while I used the Delta’s.

I’m riding in Point Richmond and I hear a hiss of air coming out of my front tire. Since I used my tube and I don’t have my patch kit with me, with my Brompton. So I’ll have my Dad come and get me. Yeah riding a bicycle can humble a person.

Got my Schwalbe Marathon tires on the bicycle and I will get a patch kit to carry just in case.

Rough Day on the Bicycle

Probably should have skipped the bicycle ride today. It is cold and rain is spotty. But decided to pedal on.

Going through the light at San Pablo Ave and Church Lane a car making a right decides to hit me. I tried to keep the bicycle up, but it ended up sliding on its side and I stayed on my feet. Everything on the Bicycle looks fine and I don’t seem to be hurt.

I’m on the Ohlone Trail by the Del Norte Apartments and my rear tire feels low. Looks like I got to change a flat.

I was going to ride to Barnes and Noble but I think I will take a ride to the Pedaler and have the bicycle looked at. Looks like the rear real has a slight wobble.

Looks like the rear tire has a slow leak. I didn’t see anything when I checked the tire and rim. I’ll let the mechanic at the Pedaler deal with it.

The mechanic did find a small piece of metal which caused a slow leak. The rear rim does need to be trued. I get an appointment for 6 December. I decided to get a tune up while it is there and I leave the bicycle. Now for the walk home.

What I had to carry on my walk home.

At 1440 I get a call from the Pedaler that the bicycle is done. This is good news. Now to get the bicycle rack on the car and go pick it up.

The bicycle is home. I don’t work on Monday so I can go on a bicycle ride. Can’t keep a bicyclist down.

Misadventures in Bicycling

Bicyclist will tell you: Bicycling is fun and it is healthy. This is true, but the crazy things that happen they will not tell you. Bicyclist just want to get you riding. Enjoy the fun.

Nothing worse than enjoying a ride and then there is a flat. Of course it is always the back tire. Before you start riding you should learn to fix a flat. You don’t want to be in the middle of nowhere and can’t fix a flat. Of course there is YouTube to show you how, hope you have a signal.

I’m ready to ride and I get to the bicycle and the rear tire is flat. No problem, I can change the tube. I hear the bicycle gods laughing.

My rear tire tread is worn, but that is not the problem. There is a crack in the tire and that is not a good thing. There are a couple of smaller ones.

Now I have to get a tire. I go to REI and they don’t have any Schwalbe Marathon 700/35’s. So off to the Pedaler.

No surprise, they don’t have any Schwalbe Marathon 700/35’s. These are my favorite tires. But they have Schwalbe Delta Cruiser Active and they are a cream color. Not what I want. There was a tire I did like but they only had one. I don’t like two different tires on my bicycle. The bicycle rides different or it could be a psychological thing. So I take the Delta Curiser’s.

My bicycle with the Schwalbe Delta Cruiser Active tires. I like the look on the bicycle.

Sometimes riding on the street is like a suicide mission. Forget that all car drivers are going to give you three feet. Just pedal along and hold your line. Also learn to read car drivers. I learned that the way the position the car or if they are looking in a direction they are probably going that way. I ride defensively.

When I ride a route I’m always looking for different routes to do. Sometimes the hard part is staying on a route because another route looks better. But I store it in my mind for later.

Sometimes a first ride is more getting lost, wrong turns and going a longer way. I may have to ride the route again so I can do what I wanted to do. I’m either going exploring or I want to see something.

I’m done being mad when something goes wrong. It happens and I deal with it. But sometimes it takes longer to deal with a problem and maybe the ride doesn’t happen.

Bicycle Ride to China Camp

Finally decided to take a bicycle ride to China Camp. Been wanting to do this ride for a while and today is the day.

There are a lot of group riders on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge today. It goes in waves.

At least most of the riding is on bicycle paths. Nice to be out of traffic. It is more relaxing. I don’t have to be on high alert.

The bicycle path along 101.

I don’t know why I thought this was going to be a flat ride, but I was wrong. Plenty of climbs to give my legs a good workout.

Made it to China Camp.

I enjoyed the bicycle ride to China Camp. Nice place to rest and relax. Got some reading in and enjoyed my snacks.

Off to Tiburon

It is overcast out and that means perfect bicycle riding weather. So I guess I will ride to Tiburon.

At least the RSR Bridge bicycle lane is empty. I like the quiet riding. Sometimes starting early works in my favor.

I see the to Tiburon sign but I decide not to turn right, but keep going straight. This could be a bad decision. But won’t be the first and I like a good adventure.

There a lot of climbs and some good downhills, but not too bad.

There is a park called Paradise Park. I will have to check it out one day. Don’t have time to stop and take a peak.

This route isn’t bad. It is the back way into downtown Tiburon. Think I will use this route.

The view of the Golden Gate Bridge from Tiburon. Nice view and a great place to relax.

Pelicans are out in full force.

Think I will take the same route back and stop at Paradise Park. Not a bad park. A lot of picnic tables and a fishing pier.

This was a fun ride. Will have to do it again one day.

Brompton

Haven’t been on my Brompton for a while. Decided to take it out today.

It was good to be on the Brompton. I think it will be my after work bicycle. It is good for the bike/walk trail and around town.

I don’t think I could ride it on my longer rides. Going up climbs is rough. Could use a lower gear than the one that is on it.

I did put Schwalbe Marathon tires on it. I like Schwalbe tires, they are pretty durable. I have Schwalbe Marathon tires on my Safari and I haven’t gotten a flat. Stick with what works.
