Bicycle Ride to Treasure Island

Decided to take a bicycle ride to Treasure Island. Been wanting to do it. Hopefully the bicycle lanes are in place. Don’t want to ride on narrow streets.

Enjoyed riding around Treasure Island. The views were nice. Did not enjoy the pedal back to the Bay Bridge. The ride up was brutal. The coast down was great, but the pedal up was brutal. At least there is a bicycle lane.

Off To San Rafael

Going to pedal to San Rafael and go to Phyllis Giant Burger’s. The one is Mill Valley is temporary closed, but the one in San Rafael is closer.

I thought it would be in downtown San Rafael. It wasn’t. I also noticed that there aren’t too many bicycle racks around. San Rafael does have a nice downtown.

Finally made it. There are no bicycle racks. Had to lock up to a pole. The burger was good.

Can’t believe the rain decided to stop by. I wasn’t expecting any rain. Wasn’t supposed to rain but can never trust the weather reports.

Nice to see the bicycle lanes on Fourth Street are completed. Makes for great riding.

It is always a pain to ride when the work on bicycle lanes are being done, but when they are done it is so nice to ride.

Even with the rain it was a nice ride. I wanted to go to Phyllis Giant Burgers in San Rafael for a while so it is nice to pedal out there.

I really hope car culture does not win and the bicycle lane on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge is removed. I like exploring Marin County on my bicycle. I really do not want to put my bicycle on my car and drive over there to just ride.

Bicycle Notes

The Bicycle lane on Rumrill Blvd is finally finished. Makes for a nice route to Richmond Pkwy going to Point Richmond and hitting the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Too bad the bicycle lane is only in San Pablo and doesn’t go into Richmond.

Talk again about removing the Bicycle lane on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Cars have got to have their lane to pull over to the side if there is a problem or an accident. Drivers can’t get it through their heads that they have to pay attention when they drive and their car is not a bumper car.

Sometimes it is hard to be a bicyclist in California. The politicians can’t get past car culture and bicycle lanes can be built but there are limits. Don’t interfer with cars.

One of the big problems is that some of the bicycle lanes are not being used because roadies don’t use them. It isn’t on a route they use to ride like they are in a bicycle race. Bicyclist who are not roadies need to get out and use the bicycle lanes to get to places. Be seen.

Was going to stop at Starbucks in San Pablo, but the door was locked and only the drive thru was open. So much for getting something. Not the first time a place was locked and only the drive thru was open. Rough when I’m on a bicycle. Again car culture for the win.

Decided to stop at Contra Costa College for a break. It is a nice campus and good for a relaxing break.

I am thankful for the bicycle lanes that have been put into place. It is nice to have space away from cars. It is better than when I started bicycle riding in the 70s. Felt like a suicide mission on every ride.

Three Weeks of Bad Luck

I’m three weeks into bad luck of bicycle riding. Haven’t had a run like this in a while. But this is how it goes. It all happened on the way home.

First week: I’m riding from Orinda and decide to hit Appian Way to get home. Not my usual way home. In El Sobrante I make a right turn onto Appian Way and my bicycle is bouncy. I know that feeling, real tire flat. Got a nail in the tire.

Second Week: I’m on Gerrard Ave and near Peres school I hit the entrance to connect to the trail to head to Point Pinole and don’t know what happened. Next thing I know I’m on the ground. Glad I had my helmet on because my head made contact with concrete. I have blood running down my nose, my right knee lost skin and a nice cut on my right ankle. Haven’t crashed like this in years.

Third week: Coming back from Orinda. Decided to hit Appian Way and when I get past Valley View Road and my front tire has a flat. Maybe I should forget about the Appian Way route home. San Pablo Dam Road really needs a good cleaning.

Maybe the bike gods are trying to tell me to stay off the bicycle. Probably won’t happen, but it is in the back of my mind and the fear of riding home.

Always being passed. I like dark photos.

Hopefully my run of bad luck is over. My bicycle rides is how I relax.

Mellow Bicycle Rides

Haven’t been doing any crazy rides. Doesn’t help that it has been foggy, windy and cold. What a crazy start to summer. So just taking it easy.

Pictures shot with a 2005 Pentax Optio 60 6 megapixels. They came out pretty good.

Richmond has redesigned the bicycle path on the Richmond Pkwy. As of now the homeless encampment is gone. If Richmond brings back the homeless encampment at least bicyclist don’t have to ride through it.

A lot of my bicycle rides have turned into photo therapy. I have too many film and digital cameras, but I enjoy shooting with them. I will look at a camera and think I haven’t shot with this for a while. So off on the bicycle to take pictures.

As long as I’m on my bicycle it is a good day.

Out and About

So this begins the odyssey into lunacy

Let the bicycle ride begin. Not that I’m thrilled with the weather. It is foggy, windy and cold. Basically this is July weather. Should I be afraid of July weather.

Rode out to Albany and boy this was a mistake. Road work on Marin and streets are closed. Cars being detoured to Solano Ave. This is nuts. I always try to avoid construction work. Have a feeling this summer is going to be nothing but construction work.

Think I will stop for a burger at Al’s Big Burger. A Bacon, mushroom and swiss cheese burger is sounding good. Plus it gets me out of the cold.

Decided to stop by the San Pablo Library to get some reading in and a rest before the last pedal home. Got my comfortable chair and it is quiet so I’m good.

Made it home. Not too bad for a ride running into and avoiding road construction.

Bicycling and Hiking

Got a day off so I’m heading out to Martinez and going to see if there are bicycle racks at Mt. Wanda and going for a hike.

This is going to work. There are bicycle racks. Going to lock up the bicycle and going to check out Mt. Wanda.

Let the hiking begin. Why I like riding with hiking boots. Never know when I will choose to hike or bump into a nice hike.
Mt. Wanda is nice hike. Slight climbs but not too bad. Once I got past the climb it is pretty flat.
There is a nice view at the top and a bench to have a seat and rest.

It did get a little warm, but I had my water bottles. I rather ride my bicycle to Mt. Wanda. There is a small parking lot. Arrive at the wrong time and it could be full and I would have to park on the street.

Not a bad way to spend a day off from work. Who am I kidding I rather be bicycling riding and hiking than being at work.

Mill Valley Ride

It is foggy out and my legs are not feeling it, but I’m going to ride out to Mill Valley. See how this works out. I could change my mind if my legs start whining.

Just hit the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and the legs are doing good. Haven’t heard no complaints, so I’m going to do the ride to Mill Valley.

The climbs were rough since I really haven’t done much climbing. Hello rain who slowed down my riding. I’m glad you are gone. Now I can build up my legs. At least they weren’t whining during the climbs.

Since I’m here I think I will stop at Phyllis Giant Burger and get me a bacon cheeseburger.

This was a great tasting burger and can’t beat crinkly fries. Won’t be eating dinner tonight. I’m stuffed. This was worth the ride to Mill Valley.

I was going to stop at Barnes and Noble in Corte Madera for a short break. Get some reading in. Got a shock, it closed down. I liked this Barnes and Noble. The cafe was always quiet and you didn’t see students taking up space doing homework. They had a sign to go to El Cerrito.

Ended up doing 50 miles and the legs feel good. Not a bad day on the Bicycle.

Legs say No

The brain has an idea for a bicycle ride. Going to ride over the Golden Gate Bridge and go to San Francisco. Let the pedaling begin.

I hit the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and my legs feel tired. All the rain and not doing long rides are showing. So my legs say no.

This happens. During the drought I got a lot of long rides with hills. The rain has slowed the riding down. Not as far. I don’t like riding in the rain. So the rides aren’t as long and mostly flat. Then there are the days I don’t ride.

Even when there is a lot of bicycle riding my legs could not feel up to strength. The ups and downs of bicycle riding. It doesn’t matter if the ride is long or short as long as I get on the bicycle.

Taking a break.

Think I will stop by the San Pablo Library before my final pedal home. I like the San Pablo Library for my final break. It is a nice looking library and it is a quiet place.

Bicycle Blues

Not the way I wanted to start my bicycle ride. It is 0800 and I just woke up. This is a late time for me. I like to get up before 0700 and out the door before 0800.

Finally got rid of the Brompton. It was just sitting around and I’m not riding it. Might as well give it to someone who will ride it.

I was not a fan of changing a flat on the rear tire. It was a pain in the butt.

The rain still won’t leave, like an unwanted house guess. At least I’m use to riding in the rain, still not a fan.

I feel like I’m on an obstacle course because of the potholes.

I’m trying to prepare my mind for the pothole repairs and blocking lanes. That is if the cities actually make it a priority. I do not like riding through construction zones. It seems when I approach a construction zone I get the stop sign and have to wait.

Been pretty quiet about keeping the bicycle lane on the Richmond-San Rafael bridge. Is this a good thing?

When it comes to bicycle lights I like the ones that take batteries. If the batteries dies at least I can stop at a store and buy some or just carry extras.
