Escapism

People have their way to escape from the routine of life. Life at times can be a pain in the ass. We go through and hope we over come and enjoy the fun that life has to offer.

Some people escape through alcohol or drugs and sometimes it just makes things worse.

Some people escape through sports. They live through the teams they follow. Life not going so well, but at least their team is winning. Hopefully the team doesn’t suck, because nothing is worse than watching a favorite team losing while one’s life is the pits.

Some people use religion to escape. Yeah life sucks, but in the end everything will be okay.

I escape through books or bike riding. I like when I ride on an empty quiet road. Love listening to the birds, cows and frogs. The thoughts that run through my head can be entertaining. Sometimes I wonder where they come from. I’m not purposefully thinking the the thoughts. Sometimes I think nothing. Weird having that short period where nothing is going through my mind. Just quiet. Until I realize I’m not thinking anything and start thinking. Bike riding is the best meditation I can think of.

I got off the sports bandwagon and now I cheer myself on when I’m climbing a hill I have no business being on. But I slowly pedal on and before I realize it I’m at the top. No I don’t start my race down hill. I stop, have a sip of water, and enjoy the view. I earned it, why not savor it? Then I race down hill.

I always carry a book or my kindle. Never know when I find a nice quiet spot that whispers, “Come take a break here.” Nothing like resting and enjoying a book.

My favorite place to stop is Peet’s for my jasmine green tea. I like to relax and enjoy the classical music. That is what I like about Peet’s they play classical music. The only thing that Peet’s lacks is something good to eat. Really don’t feel like eating cookies. Best time to hit Peet’s is in the morning when they have the breakfast stuff out.

Brompton Fun

Not going to break any speed records on the Brompton. But the Brompton getting on the bike at the spur of the moment and enjoying the sights. It is so nice to have it in the car and ready to go at anytime.

I guess I attract the smart asses. A guy on his road bike built for speed told me to get rid of the clownut bike and get a real bike. I was able to yell back that, “I have a real bike.” But the three bicyclist made my day when they told me nice bike.

Once I got use to the sixteen inch wheels I forgot about being on a folding bike. The ride is great and fun. Best thing is folding it up and taking it with me into an establishment. Yep no bike lock. All I can say is enjoy the ride.

Brompton has Arrived.

The Brompton has arrived. I was informed that I should give it a name. Never been one for naming bicycles. Since it is apple green I will call it Apple Jack.

Apple Jack - my Brompton

Apple Jack – my Brompton

It does ride nice, but I did have to get use the the sixteen inch wheels and not having my feet clipped in. It is nice to be able to fold the bike and take it on a crowded train and during commute hours. The advantage of a folding bike.

I decided to put a knobbie type tire on my Cannondale Quick. Riding on the road isn’t as smooth as it was with the skinny tires, but I still prefer a knobbie type tire. I find myself riding a trail or two on my rides and the skinny tire just doesn’t cut it.

Of course it is a slower ride, but I don’t care about riding fast anymore. It is about seeing the sights and taking a rest under one of my favorite trees, read a book or take a nap. Yeah I will never be confused with the road racers that always pass me up. I have accepted that when one sees me the pace is picked up to catch and pass me. I’m good for one’s ego.

Tune up

Took my bike to the Pedaler for a tune up. I get the tune up for free and is the last one for my one year. Buy a bike at the Pedaler and get one year free tune ups and adjustments. A great local bike shop in El Sobrante California. If you live close pay them a visit.

So vacation bids at work is going on. Being single and having no kids means I don’t need to bid for anything. I’m comfortable when I want to do something throughout the year to go up to the calendar and see what days are available. Besides I hate planning vacation. How the hell am I supposed to know what I want to do in June.

I do hate when my bike is in the shop. I like my bike rides on my days off. Guess I will hit the gym and maybe go for a hike.

Pig Farm Hill

So U.S. House of Representatives is going to gut biking and walking programs. In the U.S. obesity rates keep going up, cars are getting expensive to buy and to maintain while wages drop. So I guess we are being told that a bike is not a transportation alternative and going to make it as inconvenient as possible. What message is being sent. Bike Programs on the Brink.

I wonder how much money car companies and unions have thrown into all of this. They seem to benefit from the whole thing.

I get why Americans like their cars. Nothing says freedom like getting into your car and taking a road trip. Some times it is nice just to be in your car away from the world listening to news or sports or music. Some people even turn the car into their own little disco or concert hall.

I had a hundred mile round trip commute from home to work. The drive was a pain with the traffic, but getting off at 11:30pm and driving home was relaxing. Loved driving in the dark listening to Coast to Coast am after a stressful time at work relaxed me. But the maintenance cost was a big drain on my budget. I needed the job and it paid pretty good.

I used BART and my bike sometimes to save money, but if I did any overtime I was stuck sitting in the break room until 3:30am and then it was off to the BART station. BART stops running at midnight and doesn’t open until 4am. It was a long six years.

People can still do what they want to do on a bike just like they can do in a car. May take a little longer to do. Best of all people get some exercise and get the endorphins going and feel great. Personally I love my time on my bike. Nothing like being on a quiet road and listening to the birds and cows.

Waiting for my Brompton to arrive is giving me a lesson in patience. It feels like a year is going by.
